During 3 decades Mercedes denied competition interest. There was one man, and lucky for the racing sport that he was there, who was convinced to change that. Eric Waxenberger, alias Wax'l, was the test and development driver for Mercedes in the seventies. The 6ft Bavarian hurricane with a lack of company politics managed to create a structure to run racing cars.
After successes in the "saloon class" and 24Hour Races, there was no activity for some time.
In 1977 the Mercedes-Benz 280E won the Rally Marathon London-Sidney. This was the start of a short but much discussed Rally adventure.
